While the Catholic Church records in Portugal, the Azores, Madeira and Brazil are excellent, they are frequently difficult to read and interpret. Further confusion for Portuguese researchers is the unique naming traditions in Portuguese-speaking countries, where surnames are seemingly randomly assigned.
